Overview

Are you a food lover or someone who simply is interested to know how what Kenyans eat everyday and how to cook these foods? Do you wish to visit a local market and interact with the sellers while buying some ingredients to later cook in a home setting? Do you wish to get into the party buses that you see hyped in Nairobi? This tour is just for you.

In this tour, we explain to you the evolution of the foods that Kenyans consume on daily basis. We start by visiting the local market(not supermarket or grocery store) where we buy some of the fresh ingredients. Kindly be free to tell any ingredient that you are ALLERGIC to as this might mean altering or adding something to the menu to accommodate you. In the market we educate you on how to choose the best of each ingredients. We give you some money for you to buy some items as you naturally interact with the traders. Ask the traders politely if you wish to take a photo of them or their products as subject otherwise wide photos with no particular subject are allowed. While at the market, we buy you a snack of your choice. Kenyans never leave a market without eating a snack which is either a fruit, grilled maize(mahindi choma), 'smocha' (smokie/sausage/hotdog rolled in a 'chapati' with some diced tomatoes and red onions) e.t.c. Note that WE PAY FOR ALL THE ITEMS including your snack - no additional charges from you. Your safety is also guaranteed.

After the market experience, we walk to the bus stop while carrying our full traditional baskets 'Kiondo' where we patiently wait for a 'Nganya/mat/mathree/Kîraî' - youthful names for matatus which are the most common public transport means amongst the youth. These buses are full of graffiti, more screens than people, music and the hype around them is out of this world. If you wish for some peace, quiet and enhanced convenience, there are many other options including Uber and quiet buses. We drive in the bus for about 10 mins. We alight at a shopping mall which is close home. We might get something at the mall if need be but normally we just go through the gates or around the mall to get home. Incase you wish to stroll around the mall later, kindly be free to communicate.

At home we start by cleaning our hands. We dress you up with a 'leso', traditional wrap with a message written on it, then tie a head wrap the traditional way. After this, preparation of the ingredients starts. From getting the maize out of the cob, peeling and cleaning potatoes and cleaning the vegetables, we do it all. The men in the group get to cut the meat as men traditional do in Kenya but they can also participate in the full cooking. After this, the guided cooking starts. Our menu includes, MOKIMO, BEEF/GOAT STEW, CHAPATI and or UGALI and AFRICAN TEA.

Finally all food is ready and we get to sit and eat as we chitchat. You go home with a full stomach and some more packed food to enjoy later
